BRUSSELS, March 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has warned this Thursday of the risk of not counting on China to seek an end to the war in Ukraine, after the peace plan put on the table by Beijing and discussed in recent days by the Chinese President Xi Jinping with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

As part of his participation in the meeting of heads of state and government in Brussels, Guterres addressed the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, insisting on his call for “a just peace”, in line with the United Nations Charter. , International Law and the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly that supports the Ukrainian peace formula, said a United Nations statement.

Said resolution upholds the need for a “general, just and lasting peace” and demands the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces from Ukrainian territory “within its internationally recognized borders”, and requests the cessation of hostilities.

The Portuguese politician has assessed points of the Chinese plan such as his firm opposition to the eventual use of nuclear weapons and has emphasized that China must be counted on in the efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine, several diplomatic sources have indicated.

In the exchange with the head of the UN, the EU leaders reaffirmed their full commitment to the United Nations Charter and its principles, at a time when these are being violated by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, condemned by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

“They remain determined to face the global repercussions of Russian aggression, and reiterated the demand that Russia immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” the European leaders have defended. according to the statement published by the Council.
