Dec. 31 () –

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, has affirmed that the “powerful appeals” of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in favor of the “marginalized” and his calls to reduce the gap between rich and poor “are more relevant than ever”.

Guterres has regretted in a statement the death of the former Pontiff, whom he has remembered as a “tireless” person in the search for peace and “determined” in the defense of Human Rights.

“We remember his visit in 2008 and his speech before the United Nations, with a call to ‘build international relations in a way that allows each person and each people to feel that they can make a difference,'” he added.

The head of the UN has offered his condolences to Catholics around the world and to all those who have felt “inspired” by the figure and the speeches of the late pope emeritus.
