Guterres says attacks in Beirut and Tehran represent a 'dangerous escalation' in the region

Jul 31. (EUROPA PRESS) –

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that the attacks in Beirut and Tehran in recent hours represent a “dangerous escalation” in the region at a time when the parties should be devoting all their efforts to reaching a ceasefire for the Gaza Strip.

“The Secretary-General has consistently called for everyone to show maximum restraint. However, it is increasingly clear that restraint alone is insufficient at such a sensitive moment,” his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said in a statement published on Wednesday.

In this regard, he said that what can be perceived are “efforts to undermine” these objectives of achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, an increase in aid for the Gazan population and the return to calm in Lebanon.

“The international community must work together to prevent any action that could push the entire Middle East into the abyss, with a devastating impact on civilians. The way to do this is by promoting diplomatic action for regional de-escalation,” he concluded.

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the latest developments in the region, including the death of the leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in an attack attributed to Israel and carried out in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
