The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, was this Tuesday “heartbroken” by the “horror and suffering” of the Palestinians who have shown the images of the attacks by the Israeli Army against camps for displaced people in the city of Rafá, in the south of the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 70 dead since Sunday.

“(Guterres) has condemned in the strongest terms the May 26 airstrikes on Rafah, which hit tents where displaced people were taking refuge. He is heartbroken by the images of the dead and injured, including many children As he has said before, the horror and suffering must stop immediately,” said the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement.

In addition, it has urged Israel to comply with the order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which called for the cessation of the attacks on Rafah, and to allow the entry of humanitarian aid to the enclave in accordance with resolution 2712 (2023) of the UN Security Council to avoid the prospect of a “man-made famine”.

Guterres has also called for working “expeditiously” to restore a situation of “security, dignity and hope” for the affected civilians, and that this includes strengthening the Government of the Palestinian Authority and its institutions, preparing it to resume its responsibility in the Strip, and to create a “political horizon” that is “tangible and irreversible.”

“The devastation and misery of the last seven months have reinforced the absolute need for Israelis, Palestinians, the States of the region and the international community in general to adopt urgent measures that allow the parties to resume the long-delayed political path, to achieve a two-state solution,” added Guterres.

Finally, the Secretary General has reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages, in addition to regretting the deaths of both the more than 36,000 Palestinians in Israeli attacks and the more than 1,200 Israeli citizens killed in the assault by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7.
