UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday expressed concern about the possibility of further escalation of tensions in the Middle East following a series of Israeli airstrikes in Syria that have left 18 people dead, including four civilians, and 32 injured.
“(Guterres) remains deeply concerned about the prospect of further escalation of violence in what is already a highly volatile region. That is an understatement, to say the least. He is again calling for caution: any miscalculation could lead to further violence, to a wider conflict,” said the Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, during a press conference.
He then reiterated his call for all parties to “act with maximum restraint” and to respect their obligations under international law and international humanitarian law.
The Israeli army carried out a series of strikes on Sunday against the central province of Hama, targeting military positions and the Masyaf Scientific Research Center, which has already been bombed in the past and is accused of being behind research and development work on biological, chemical and nuclear weapons, although the authorities have not yet commented on whether it has been hit.
