Guterres condemns the "shocking" attack against the prime minister of Slovakia

May 16. () –

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, condemned this Wednesday the “shocking” attack against the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who was injured after being shot in the streets of the city of Handlova, in the center of the country, at the end of a meeting of the Slovak Executive.

“(Guterres) strongly condemns the shocking attack carried out this Wednesday against the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico. The Secretary-General’s thoughts are with the Prime Minister and his loved ones at this difficult time,” said his deputy spokesperson. , Farhan Haq, during a press conference.

Fico, close to Kremlin positions, has had to undergo a long surgical procedure, although he is stable and his life is not in danger. The head of the Slovak Government has been urgently transferred by helicopter from the city of Handlova, in the center of the country, to the Roosevelt Hospital in Banská Bystrica, since the transfer to Bratislava would be too long.

Authorities have identified the attacker, who has been detained, as Juraj Cintula, a 71-year-old writer, member of the Slovak Writers Association and founder of a literary group. The attacker was carrying the weapon legally, according to the local press.

At the end of October, Fico was sworn in as Prime Minister of Slovakia for the fourth time after his resignation in 2018, when there were a series of protests over the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak, who was investigating the activities of the Italian mafia in the country. His appointment a little over half a year ago was surrounded by controversy and criticism due to his pro-Russian stance in the midst of the invasion of Ukraine. Fico assured that the new legislature would be marked by a “sovereign” foreign policy.
