The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has condemned the air strike this Saturday in Omdurman (Sudan), which has resulted in 22 fatalities, and has expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased, also wishing a speedy recovery to people who have been injured.
Likewise, Guterres has been “dismayed” by the escalation of violence and the number of victims in the Sudanese region of Darfur, as well as by the increasing clashes in North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
“There is an absolute disregard for humanitarian and human rights laws that is dangerous and disturbing,” lamented the secretary general.
“Deeply concerned” about the situation in Sudan in particular and about the stability of the region in general, the UN representative has called on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to “stop fight and commit to a lasting cessation of hostilities”.
Along the same lines, Guterres has encouraged both parties to comply with their obligations “under International Human Rights and Human Rights Law to protect civilians and allow humanitarian action.”
The conflict that broke out between both sides on April 15 has so far left 1,133 dead, according to the Ministry of Health, but the real figures could be much higher taking into account the intercommunal violence unleashed in the regions of Kordofan and Darfur.
More than 2.9 million people have been displaced, including nearly 700,000 who have fled to neighboring countries, amid reports of daily atrocities and large-scale sexual abuse of the country’s women and girls.
