The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has condemned this Monday the suicide attack perpetrated inside a mosque in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, capital of the province of Jiber Pajtunjua (north), which has left 59 dead for the moment. and 157 wounded.
Guterres recalled that freedom of religion is a universal human right: “It is particularly abominable that the attack occurred in a place of worship,” reads a UN statement.
Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, explained that the Secretary General has expressed “his deepest condolences to the families” of the victims and has reiterated “the solidarity of the United Nations with the Government and the people of Pakistan in their efforts to address terrorism and violent extremism”.
More than 59 people have died and around 150 have been injured by a suicide attack perpetrated this Monday by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), known as the Pakistani Taliban, inside a mosque in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, capital of the province of Jiber Pajtunjua (north).
A spokesman for the Lady Reading Hospital, Mohammad Asim, has informed the newspaper ‘Dawn’ of the latest number of deaths and injuries, and it is not ruled out that the figure will increase, due to the seriousness of some of these injuries and that there would still be people buried under the rubble of the building.
Among the deceased is the imam of the Sahibzada Nurulamin mosque, as confirmed by the Police. The suicide bomber had placed himself in the front row during a prayer that took place in the mosque before activating the explosive charge he was carrying, after which TTP has published a statement on its propaganda channels stating that he was a member of the group.
