United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday condemned the “slaughter of civilians” in response to the Israeli army’s attack on a displaced persons camp in Al Mawasi, near Khan Yunis, which left at least 90 dead and 300 wounded.
The UN representative said he was “shocked and saddened by the loss of human life,” referring to the Israeli bombing that claimed the lives of at least 90 people on Saturday, half of them women and children.
The bombing, which targeted Hamas’ top military officer, Mohamed Deif, and the Islamist movement’s local commander in Khan Yunis, Rafa’a Salame, took place in a densely populated area “designated as a humanitarian zone for hosting displaced persons”, despite Israeli officials claiming it was a “precision” strike.
“This underlines that nowhere is safe in Gaza,” said the spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, while reiterating once again the need for an “immediate” humanitarian ceasefire, with “all” hostages released immediately and unconditionally.
These statements follow those of the UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, who has described the attack as a “senseless massacre.” “The justification is always the same: ‘attack against Palestinian militants’ (…) When will the world stop this machine of death?” she has appealed from her account on the social network X.
The death toll from the military offensive launched by Israel against the Gaza Strip months ago following the attacks of 7 October has now exceeded 38,400, while the number of wounded is approaching 88,500, according to official figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.
