United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday condemned the Israeli parliament’s approval of a resolution rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state, even through negotiations, as it would pose an “existential danger” to the country.
“The Secretary-General is disappointed by the Knesset’s decision to adopt a motion opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River,” said UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.
In this regard, he explained that “ending the occupation and negotiating a two-state solution” where Israel can coexist with an “independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign” Palestinian state — on the recognized 1967 border, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states — is “the only path to sustainable peace.”
The motion passed by Parliament is therefore “clearly incompatible with UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements.” In Guterres’ words, “a stake has been driven into the heart of any prospect of a two-state solution.”
The Knesset vote ended the day before with 68 votes in favor — parties of the government coalition, right-wing and centrist opposition formations and even the Hadash Ta’al coalition, made up of socialists and Arab Israelis — against nine votes against, despite the fact that deputies of the leftist Yesh Atid party walked out of the chamber.
The MPs justified their decision by their fear that the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) would seize power in a future Palestinian state to turn it into “a base of radical Islamic terror” working in “coordination” with Iran to destroy Israel.
It is worth noting that last February the Israeli Parliament also voted by a large majority to reject the “unilateral recognition” of the Palestinian State.
