UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for cooperation from all member states to hold accountable those responsible for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was hit by a missile over eastern Ukraine in 2014 with 298 people on board, an incident that marks its 10th anniversary this Wednesday.
“(Guterres) sadly remembers the 298 victims who lost their lives. In full solidarity with the families of the victims and in honour of their memory, the Secretary-General renews his call to all States to provide their full cooperation, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2166 adopted in 2014, to ensure that those responsible are held accountable, following the important work of the Joint Investigation Team,” his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said in a statement.
The aircraft was hit on 17 July 2014 while flying over the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine, controlled by pro-Russian rebels. The Dutch Security Board concluded in October 2015 that the Boeing 777 was hit by a Russian-made Buk missile.
The Joint Investigation Team, which included Dutch, Australian, Belgian, Malaysian and Ukrainian authorities, subsequently confirmed in 2018 that the missile was Russia’s, although Moscow has always denied any responsibility for the downing and has even denied providing equipment and weapons to the separatist rebels.
Both Australia and the Netherlands have been seeking compensation and an official apology from Russia following the disaster that claimed the lives of 298 people, including 38 Australians.
