The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, supported Iraq’s efforts to achieve peace on Tuesday at a press conference with the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, in what is his first visit to the country for six years. .
Guterres has indicated that he hopes that the Iraqi people can overcome “the challenges and difficulties” they face. The UN Secretary General has also expressed that he hopes to visit the Kurdistan region later this week, the INA news agency reported.
For his part, Hussein stressed that the visit was made “at the request” of the Iraqi authorities, since the relationship between the two parties is “interactive.” “We look forward to holding intensive discussions on the evolution of the political situation in Iraq and the situation in the region and the world,” he said.
Likewise, the head of Foreign Affairs has specified that from Iraq they appreciate the role that both the United Nations and the Secretary General have played in the process towards democracy in the country, as reported by the Shafaq news portal.
During the visit, Guterres plans to meet both the Foreign Minister and the main leaders of the Iraqi Presidency.
