Gunmen kill the women and five children of a local Nigerian leader for collaborating with the government

5 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A group of armed men have killed the women and five children of a local leader in the Nigerian state of Taraba, in the northeast of the country, who collaborated with the Government and had spoken out against the kidnappings carried out by numerous groups of “bandits” that ravage the country.

The attack took place on Saturday night in Jalingo, the state capital, where relatives of the local chief were first kidnapped before being killed, police sources confirmed to the Premium Times newspaper.

Residents of the city have explained that the assailants were chasing the chief for cooperating with security agencies in the area and with the group of vigilantes paid by local authorities who are fighting the bandits.

The chief was also known for asking area residents not to pay ransoms for kidnappings by outlaws.

The remains of the traditional ruler’s family members were deposited at the district headquarters in Mutumbiyu for Islamic burial.
