The governor of Conakry, Hadja M’Mahawa Sylla, stated this Sunday that the demonstrations called by the Guinean platform Living Forces of Guinea (FVG), which brings together opposition parties and civil organizations critical of the military junta, are prohibited in the absence having requested authorization.
“We learned from the press about the organization of peaceful marches by entities that call themselves FVG starting this Monday. But no municipal authority has received a declaration of protest from any organization to date, when any demonstration of a political nature in life public is subject to prior authorization,” reads a statement.
In this sense, he clarified that “this unauthorized demonstration scheduled for January 6, 2025 is formally prohibited.” “Thus, the governorate of Conakry urges the population to freely carry out their daily activities and calls on the security forces to take all necessary measures to guarantee the free movement of people and their goods,” he added.
At the end of December, the FVG announced that they would stop recognizing the transitional authorities as of December 31, 2024 and demanded a “civil transition” from January 2025, calling for “peaceful” mobilizations as of January 6.
The military junta, in power since the 2021 coup against Alpha Condé, dissolved more than 50 parties at the end of October and placed around 70 under observation, including the two main opposition formations, amid rising tensions. ahead of the elections, for which there is still no date.
