Guinea rejects ECOWAS criticism and says that the transition schedule has been agreed upon

Guinea’s military junta has rejected criticism from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) about its transition schedule for the holding of elections and has stressed that the dates have been agreed upon after a dialogue at the national level.

“It is true that today there is a blockage regarding the duration of the transition, but we will provide the necessary elements and clarifications so that it is understood that this duration is not risky or superfluous, but that it was agreed upon by elements shared between the entire political actors and civil society,” said the government spokesman, Ousmane Gaoual Diallo.

Thus, he has underlined that “there is an urgent need to refound the electoral census” and has stated that the authorities “will continue to use pedagogy and explain with transparency” so that ECOWAS gives its support to the transition process, according to the portal of Guinée 360 ​​news.

“We have maintained exchanges and dialogue with ECOWAS that have allowed the Guinean context to be better understood and integrated into its decisions, which is important,” he pointed out, while defending that Conakry “will maintain this communication until these issues are resolved. differences”.

In this sense, Diallo stressed that the objective of the board is “to get out of this transition situation in the best possible way” and added that the authorities “have an interest in making progress”. “Once the explanations are given, I am sure that the lines will move in relation to the duration (of the transition),” he has riveted.

ECOWAS decided during its last summit, held over the weekend, to threaten the imposition of new sanctions if the board and the body fail to agree on a new transition schedule within a month, while appointing a new mediator for the talks, former Beninese president Thomas Boni Yayi.

The National Committee for Reconciliation and Development (CNRD), the official name of the board formed in the African country after the coup in September 2021 against the then president, Alpha Condé. The board is headed by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, now also the Guinean transitional president.
