July 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Guinea’s military junta has denied having reached an agreement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to set a duration of 24 months for the open transition after the September 2021 coup d’état, which overthrew the then president, Alpha Conde.
The president of Guinea Bissau and rotating president of the regional body, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, unveiled the agreement on Thursday and assured that he had managed to “convince” Conakry to set aside his proposal for a 36-month transition.
However, the Minister of Territory Administration and Decentralization, Mory Condé, has responded to this information on his account on the social network Twitter and has stated that the discussions focused on “the content of the transition, not its duration. “.
“The Government of Guinea is completely disassociated from this matter of duration,” he pointed out.
The riot in Guinea took place after months of political crisis in the country due to Condé’s decision to modify the Constitution to run for a third term and his victory in the 2020 presidential elections, in which the rest of the candidates, including the leader opponent, Cellou Dalein Diallo, denounced fraud.
