The murder of community journalist Eduardo Fernando Mendizábal, committed last weekend, on the outskirts of Guatemala City entails several lines of investigation, according to the Public Ministry.
Mendizábal died in a care center where he was sent on Saturday, after receiving at least 30 shots, according to the ballistics report carried out by law enforcement at the crime scene.
The Public Ministry of Guatemala has announced that it is conducting the investigation with several open hypotheses on which it will report as progress is made in the work of the prosecutors. It was reported that a mobile phone was found at the crime scene that will be analyzed, in addition to 30 bullet casings used in the assault.
The media outlet Visor Villa Canales, the variety page created by Mendizábal where he broadcast news and information for his community, of the same name, on the outskirts of the Guatemalan capital, has highlighted the work of the communicator; the first journalist from the Central American region assassinated this year.
The Public Ministry of Guatemala reported that it has the order to review the recordings of the security cameras located in the surrounding streets to verify the movements made by the attackers.
It has not been revealed that the communicator had received threats to his integrity for any communication related to his work.
The Guatemalan Association of Journalists has recorded more than 350 attacks against reporters between 2019 and 2022, including murder as a lethal way to silence the work of the press.
