Guatemala will require a visa for Dominicans after an increase in irregular flow

Arrival of Venezuelans causes "unprecedented migration crisis" in Honduras

SAN SALVADOR – Citizens of the Dominican Republic seeking to enter Guatemala must obtain a category B visa, the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM) reported on Tuesday after analyzing the increase in the irregular migratory flow of people from that country.

The measure will begin to be applied in 15 business days, and Dominicans who wish to start the process must do so before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala and not before the IGM. Once authorized, the applicant may remain in Guatemalan territory for up to 90 days.

“During the last months there has been an increase in the irregular migratory flow of people from the Dominican Republic. During the year 2022, the entry of 1,393 people of this nationality to Guatemalan territory was not admitted for failing to comply with the established migratory requirements, “says the Institute Guatemalan Immigration.

In 2021, Guatemala did not admit the entry of 474 Dominicans. In 2022, the number rose to 1,393, which is equivalent to an increase of 193%.

Guatemalan Migration maintained that the measure is due to the increase in the irregular migratory flow of people from the Dominican Republic seeking to reach the United States.
