ERKELENZ (GERMANY), 14 Jan. (DPA/EP) –
The Swedish activist Greta Thungberg will participate in a rally that will take place this Saturday against the demolition of the mining town of Lützerath, in western Germany, to make way for a mining construction.
Police expect around 8,000 attendees at the demonstration that will take place in the neighboring town of Keyenberg, which, like Lützerath, is part of the Rhine city of Erkelenz.
The rally’s slogan is “Stop eviction! For climate justice.”
According to the organizers, the program with bands and live performances will begin at 11:00 in the morning (local time) and the demonstration itself at noon.
The participation of 50 cities and 14 federal states is also expected, as reported by the environmental group ‘Fridays for Future’.
“The situation in Lützerath is a great international shame for the German government,” Thunberg admitted in Cologne before the protest.
“People have been defending Lützerath for years, as part of a global movement for justice,” he added, while acknowledging that the fact that people are taking action is a sign of hope.
The 20-year-old appealed to all citizens to join the demonstration.
Since Wednesday, the Police have proceeded to evacuate and demolish the place, occupied until then by climate activists.
In this context, the energy company RWE intends to excavate the lignite below. According to the state and federal governments, this is necessary to ensure energy security. The activists deny this: according to them, the lignite from the current open pit mine is sufficient.
