Greenland presents a new draft for its first Constitution

28 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

A commission of the Greenland Parliament has presented this Friday, after three years of work, a new draft for the first Constitution of the island under Danish administration.

The presentation of this project represents an important step for Greenland with a view to one day becoming an independent sovereign State. Parliament can now decide how to proceed with the proposal, although there are no concrete plans yet.

Greenland is largely self-governing, but officially belongs to Denmark, so it is under its Constitution, as well as receiving strong financial support. It also largely decides on its foreign policy and security affairs.

The constitutional project consists of 49 paragraphs divided into eleven articles spread over fifteen pages. In several areas, however, the commission has not reached a conclusion, such as that the island adopt the name of Kalaallit Nunaat in the event of future independence, reports the local newspaper ‘Sermitsiaq’.

With regard to the government regime, the commission defends that it be conformed as a state without the epigraph of republic, since they consider that frequently these arise after abolishing a monarchy, while the head of government will also be the head of state.

Among the rest of the points, the separation of powers stands out, the right of assembly, demonstration, freedom of religion, expression, decent housing, the absence of the death penalty as punishment, as well as the sustainable use of resources. country natives.
