Greece rescues about 150 migrants on an island in the Evros River, on the border with Turkey

June 23 () –

The Greek authorities have announced the rescue of about 150 migrants, including 30 children, who had been trapped on an island in the Evros River, located on the border with Turkey, one of the main crossing points on this migratory route.

The Greek Police has estimated the number of rescued at 145 through a statement on its website, in which it has indicated that these people were detected on Thursday by agents of the Kyprinos Border Guard Department, in Orestiada.

Thus, he pointed out that among those rescued there are 70 men, 45 women and 30 children, before stressing that a team from the Greek Red Cross has been present during the operations “to provide help in case of need.”

“The migrants were pushed into Greek territory by smugglers who took them from the opposite shore in boats and abandoned them on the island,” he detailed, while stressing that all of them “are in good health.”

The Greek authorities confirmed in early June the rescue of more than 90 migrants in this same area. Most of the land border between Greece and Turkey is delimited by the Evros river -known as Meric in Turkey-, which is why it has become a crossing point for migrants trying to access the European Union (EU). .
