March 8 () –
Thousands of workers took to the streets this Wednesday in Greece to join a new day of general strike in protest at the tragic train accident that took place last week in the country and left 57 dead.
Transport in Athens, the capital, will be affected throughout the city, as the unions had been advancing, which had announced that the strike would last until at least this Wednesday to focus on the poor situation of the railway system. .
Likewise, various organizations have called demonstrations against the Government in an itinerary that will end in front of the Parliament building in Athens, according to information from the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’.
The accident that took place on February 28 in the city of Tempe has shocked the country and has sparked much criticism about the management of the national train network and the state of its infrastructure. The workers had been warning of negligence for years, as well as the lack of resources and personnel.
Now, the situation has caused thousands of people to join the demonstrations to demand an improvement in these conditions, while the workers have called 24-hour strikes for almost a week.
The unions have claimed that they will continue with the strikes as they “fight for safe train circulation” and demand that “the truth come out and those responsible for the accident are brought to justice.”
The authorities, for their part, have not denied the problems suffered by the sector. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis admitted on Sunday that there had been “decades of negligence that could have contributed to the disaster.”
