Greece allows seized Russian tanker to sail again after paying debt

June 27. () –

Greece has authorized this Sunday the navigation of the Russian oil tanker ‘Lana’, after a long litigation that has caused a conflict with Iran and the retention of two Greek oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.

Greek authorities seized ‘Lana’ on April 14 when it took shelter from a heavy storm in a bay off the port of Karistos, on the island of Euboea.

The Iranian-flagged ship ‘Lana’, seized for carrying Iranian oil, is expected to sail to the port of Piraeus in the next few hours, after the shipowner has paid his debts to a towing company, the agency reported. Greek news agency AMNA.

The tanker ‘Pegasus’, later renamed ‘Lana’, was intercepted on its way to a terminal in Turkey for alleged violation of the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. After that, she was transferred to the port of Karistos together with the crew, of Russian nationality.

A posteriori it was determined that the cargo was about 115,000 tons of Iranian oil, which led the United States to demand the transfer of crude oil due to the sanctions imposed against Tehran, a request that was finally accepted by the Greek authorities.

This decision unleashed criticism from Tehran, which summoned the Greek charge d’affaires in Iran to transfer its protest against what they considered “unacceptable”. In addition, the Iranian Foreign Ministry criticized that Greece “has given in to pressure from the United States.”
