Government prepares decree for state of emergency in La Guajira

He President Gustavo Petro will announce in the next few hours the decree that will formalize the state of economic, social and ecological emergency in the department of La Guajira.

“The coming drought, and for which we have come, and for which we decreed the Economic, Social and Environmental Emergency in the territory of La Guajira; the decree is one signature away, it has a reality, it is the El Niño Phenomenon, which always happens, but increased by the climate crisis“said the first president.

Similarly, he added that “Coming here, as a Government, has as its objective, hopefully not illusory, to see how a Government can lay the foundations of what it could be to put itself in another lane, from the lane of exclusion to the lane of democratic inclusion, and begin that stretch towards a better port“.

It is reported that with the state of emergency, which will cover all urban and rural areas of the departmenteithergovernment “will adopt through legislative decrees, all those additional measures necessary to ward off the crisis and prevent the spread of its effects“.

In addition, according to the decree, soon to be signed, government entities may have “of the necessary budgetary operationss” to focus resources for the purpose of declaring an emergency.

Through this declaration, the Government will seek to strengthen the sectors of health, water and basic sanitation, agricultural and rural, environmental, education, energy, transport, taxes and investments, inclusion, information and communication technologies and budgetary measures, planning and contracting.

In this sense, this new decree grants the president, under the signature of all the ministers, the power to issue decrees with the force of law aimed at mitigating the expansion of the effects that make it possible to declare an emergency in the department.
