Government announces housing improvement plan for San Andrés

Within the framework of her visit to the Archipelago, the Minister of Housing, Catalina Velasco Campuzano, announced that 300 improvements will be made in San Andrés, in the remainder of the year with the Cambia Mi Casa program.

(After The Hague ruling, San Andrés asks for a boost to its economy).

“Since the government of President Petro began, we have been present in San Andrés and Providencia to bring solutions for housing, drinking water and basic sanitation. It is important to point out that the island had not had government actions in terms of housing in recent years, so this announcement, like the one in The Hague, is historic, since with the 300 improvements we began to meet the goal of 3,000 that we have for this territory before the end of the four-year period”said the minister.

Velasco also said that after talking with the communities of San Andrés, he saw the need to promote the Cambia Mi Casa program on the island to improve the floors, ceilings, walls, kitchens and bathrooms of homes, but with a differential approach, to maintain the root architecture; this will involve working with local labor and with community organizations through which the improvements are managed.

(These are the special measures to deal with crises in San Andrés).

With the Cambia Mi Casa housing program, the Government of Change seeks the decentralization of the operation and the forms of financing, with a leading role for social and community organizations; better territorial coverage to develop improvements both at the urban and rural levels, and reach the families that need it most.

According to Minvivienda, the implementation of change my house it will improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of families that today reside in housing with inadequate habitability conditions throughout the country. “This is a powerful tool for overcoming poverty and consolidating a country with equity, social justice and total peace”.

(Can Colombia ‘cry victory’ in litigation with Nicaragua?).

In terms of water, the Ministry stressed that in Providencia the water supply is advancing and that storm sewerage is a priority, as it is a pressing difficulty, for this, it is waiting for the purchase of land by the Government to start the work. In addition, Minvivienda pointed out that they are carrying out preliminary studies to implement technologies for the desalination of water on the island.
