The coronavirus pandemic gave a huge boost to the era of digital communications at a personal, educational and teleworking level, causing applications such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams to multiply their use and add new features and capabilities, it seems that google meet it didn’t fully capitalize on the opportunity and fell behind its competitors by not allowing video calls higher than 720p (HD) resolution.
Now it seems that the search engine company wants to start catching up with the competition, announcing that Google Meet now supports video calls at FullHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). However, it comes with quite a few limitations.
The first of all is that only works on two-person video calls. The second is that a payment account is required of the service integrated into Google Workspace or for users who pay for Google One and have more than 2TB of capacity. All users of personal, educational, or the most basic business accounts will be left out of this function for the moment.
Another important limitation is that only works through the web version of Google Meet, and that users will have to activate this mode manually. In any case, the first users who meet these requirements will begin to receive the FullHD video calling feature in the coming weeks, with a more general rollout starting on May 19.
