Google Hangouts officially says goodbye

All users who try to log in will be redirected to Web Chat and can continue to use Google Takeout to download their data until January 1, 2023.

“As of November 1, 2022, Hangouts on the web will no longer be available. If you want to keep your Hangouts data, we strongly recommend that you use Google Takeout and download a copy before January 1, 2023 (the date on which Hangouts data will be deleted),” Google said in a statement shared on their support page.

How to download Google Hangouts data

Google’s statement is accompanied by the following guidance:

  • Go to Google Takeout and sign in with the Google account you use for Hangouts.
  • In the available apps, select Hangouts and uncheck the rest.
  • Click Next Step.
  • Under Delivery method, choose how often you want to download the backup. Since Hangouts is going to be updated to Google Chat soon, we recommend that you download it all in one go.
  • Choose the type of file.
  • Click Export.
  • A message will appear informing you that Google is creating a copy of your Hangouts files, and you will receive an email when the export process is complete. Download the file to keep your Hangouts data.
