Google faces one more lawsuit, now Canada is going against it

According to an investigation carried out by the Canadian Competition Bureau, Google is the largest provider of these tools in this country.

The watchdog accused Google of giving its own tools preferential access to advertising inventory, sometimes selling ads at a loss to block its rivals, that is, offering them below the competition price so that the rest cannot improve the offer, as well as to dictate the conditions of use of the ad tech tools of others.

Boswell said he would ask a court to level the playing field by forcing Google to sell two of its advertising technology tools and pay an unspecified fine.

Google spokesman Dan Taylor said the company is prepared to fight accusations that it believes “ignore the intense competition (in this sector), where ad buyers and sellers have a lot to choose from.”

Lawsuits against Google

This is not the first time that the technology company has been accused of similar practices; in June 2021, the French competition watchdog fined Google 220 million euros for favoring its own services in the online advertising sector.

Google’s advertising practices are also the subject of investigations or proceedings in Great Britain, the European Union and the United States.

In June of this year, the London Competition Appeal Court authorized a class action against the technology company for alleged abuse of a dominant position in the United Kingdom digital market. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation of approximately $17.37 billion for lost revenue.

The tech giant and the US government faced off this week in federal court in a case revolving around Google’s alleged unfair dominance in online advertising.

If the judge finds Google guilty, a new phase of the trial would decide how the company should comply with that conclusion.
