Google is an enthusiast of culture, history and video games. Over time, it has launched some very interesting initiatives that mix these elements to offer proposals for educational purposes. Today we will talk about one more that they have just launched in conjunction with the National Museum of Anthropology and with which you can discover more about the ancient history of Mexico and other Latin American regions.
Google in collaboration with the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico, have just released a nice game called The Descent of the Serpent (The Descent of the Serpent).
This title is top-down style like the 2D classics of The Legend of Zeldaonly this title is based on the ancient history of Mexico and other parts of Central and South America, since its central part is to tell the ancient history of Mesopotamia.

What does it consist of The Descent of the Serpent?
This game starts today. The protagonist is visiting the National Museum of Anthropology and contemplating the section of Mesopotamia appears Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Mirror, to steal the 20 symbols of the inner ring of the Stone of the Sun.
The player’s mission is to travel to ancient Mesopotamia to retrieve them before the equinox, return them to Chichen Itza and prevent a flood or catastrophe from ending the world.
The player will first have to select 1 of 4 outfits of key characters from the history of Mesopotamia.
Meet the characters of The Descent of the Serpent
- Huitzilopochtli — Aztec god of war and the Sun, represented by the hummingbird, eagle, and wolf (this form he takes in the game).
- Xólotl — Aztec god of fire and lightning, twin brother of Quetzalcóatl who guides the deceased through the underworld (represented in the game as a dog).
- Xbalanqué — one of the Mayan hero twins, brother of Hunahpu, known for defeating the gods of the underworld and reinstating the ball game among the Mayans (represented by a jaguar).
- Mictlantecuhtli — Aztec god of death, lord of owls (form he takes in the game), spiders, and dogs.
This game has 2 modes: Story and Challenge. The first one is for players who want to enjoy the adventure and the second one is more challenging, since it only gives the player 5 lives and if he loses them he will have to return to the beginning of the maze.
In case you missed it: Crunchyroll teamed up with the Guadalajara Paleontology Museum to present an interesting proposal that mixed anime and science.
In total there are 4 zones with jungles, mountains, coasts or caves. Each one is made up of a large labyrinth and the player’s mission will be to talk to the quetzals, obtain information from wakes, collect the 5 objects of each zone and finally meet the guardian of each zone to answer a questionnaire about the details they have learned. in the adventure and thus be able to move on to the next area.
The Descent of the Serpent was created by Google Arts & Culture Experiments in conjunction with the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico and you can now play it completely and free of charge through Google Play Store (Android), app store (iOS) and any internet browser. If you play with your session logged in, you will be able to save your score and progress.
