A girl was killed and 10 people were wounded Saturday night in a shooting at a group of people outside a gathering in Chicago, an incident that police linked to gangs on the city's South Side, police said this week. Sunday.
Four of the people shot were minors. An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head and died, and a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy were each shot multiple times and are in critical condition. A 9-year-old boy was also injured with a gunshot wound to the finger and was hospitalized, police said.
In a statement, the Police Department updated the number of people shot from 8 to 11 and updated the ages of the victims, compared to a news conference Saturday night.
As of this Sunday, there were still no people arrested in connection with the attack.
Police Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome told reporters Saturday that the shooting occurred when shots were fired into a crowd outside a family gathering around 9 p.m.
“This was not a random act of violence. It was probably gang related,” Jerome said. “Make no mistake, the actions of the attackers are appalling and unacceptable in our city.”
Officers responding to a report of shots fired applied tourniquets and placed chest pads on the victims, who included adults between the ages of 19 and 40, Jerome said.
A 36-year-old man who was shot in the arms and back was in critical condition. The other adults are in good condition, police said Sunday.
The investigation is in the preliminary stage, but witnesses told police that a black sedan approached and someone fired shots into the crowd before fleeing, police said Sunday.
Jerome also told reporters Saturday that witness accounts described two possible attackers on foot.
