The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has highlighted to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, Italy’s commitment to the “transatlantic partnership” in the first telephone conversation that both leaders have had since the far-right leader took power.
As reported by the Italian Chigi Palace, Meloni has reiterated the importance of the “deep friendship” that unites Italy and the United States, especially “in light of the historical challenges facing Western democracies”, such as with the war in Ukraine and the energy and food crisis.
Biden has congratulated Meloni on his appointment and has shown his willingness to work cooperatively to “face common challenges,” the White House detailed in a statement.
Likewise, both leaders have highlighted their commitment to address “the challenges” posed by China and to guarantee “sustainable and affordable energy resources”.
