Gibraltar condemns 'stale and offensive' chants by national team at Euro 2019 party

“Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar is upset observing that several players of the Spanish men’s football team celebrated their victory in the European Cup with chants of stale comments about Gibraltar“This is how Gibraltar, a British territory on Spanish soil, expressed its discontent with the chants chanted during the celebration of the European Championship in Cibeles.

“This is a totally unnecessary mixture of a great sporting success with discriminatory political statements “which are extremely offensive to Gibraltarians,” the Gibraltar government’s statement read.

They also consider it “regrettable” that the National Team uses “the celebration platform to promote the idea of usurp the territory of Gibraltar“an attitude, they consider, is “contrary to the principle that sport should not be used to promote any politically controversial ideology.”

The 26 internationals were waiting to go on stage and started shouting “Gibraltar is Spanish”a chant that has been repeated a lot these days by fans during the run-up to and final of the Euro Cup against England.

The most surprising thing of all is that the singing, the jumping and the dancing Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida joinedthe mayor of Madrid who shouted and jumped like one more member of the national team.

It was not the only time that the internationals would repeat the chant, Alvaro Moratathe master of ceremonies of the night, repeated the chant during the presentation of his companions.

The party in the streets of Madrid to the Selection has exceeded many of the estimates. Thousands of people have welcomed the Spanish football team on their arrival at the Communications palaceheadquarters of the City of Madridlocated in the Plaza de Cibeles and the end of the celebrations for the conquest of Euro 2024 that have been taking place in the capital of Spain throughout this Monday.
