Ghost of Tsushima: Legends

The renowned video game “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends” from Sucker Punch Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment will be adapted into an anime series, as announced by Crunchyroll and Sucker Punch during Sony’s press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Monday. . The series will premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027.

“We are very excited to announce our partnership with Aniplex to bring an anime series based on the video game Ghost of Tsushima: Legends to Crunchyroll in 2027,” Sucker Punch Productions shared via its official X account (formerly known as Twitter).

An excellent production team for the new project

The project is directed by Takanobu Mizuno, known for his work on the short “The Duel” from the anime anthology “Star Wars: Visions.” The Kamikaze Douga studio, responsible for other successful works such as “Batman Ninja”, “Sand Land” and the iconic opening sequences of “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”, will be in charge of the animation.

For his part, Gen Urobuchi (who has worked on the production of works such as “Fate/Zero” and “Puella Magi Madoka Magica”) will be in charge of composing the story and Aniplex will participate as a key collaborator in the production. Meanwhile, Sony Music will be the music and soundtrack partner for the project.

From history to mythology: the change of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’

The video game “Ghost of Tsushima” was originally released in July 2020 for PlayStation 4 and later for PlayStation 5 in 2021 and PC in 2024. It is set in a fictionalization of the Mongol invasion of the island of Tsushima in the year 1274.

The plot follows Jin Sakai, the sole survivor of his clan, in his guerrilla fight against the Mongol invaders. The game achieved great success due to its focus on samurai culture and its immersive historical narrative.

“Ghost of Tsushima: Legends”, for its part, is a multiplayer extension of the game released in October 2020, which became independent from the original game in September 2021. Unlike the historical setting of the main title, “Legends” focuses in Japanese folklore and mythology and offers a more magical and supernatural vision that has enchanted players.

An anime with luxury collaborations

The announcement of the adaptation of the video game to an anime was accompanied by a lot of excitement from fans, but without a doubt the participation of prominent figures in the anime industry took expectations to new levels.

Takanobu Mizuno brings his artistic sensibility, previously demonstrated in “Star Wars: Visions,” and Gen Urobuchi brings his talent for creating deep and emotional narratives. Furthermore, Kamikaze Douga’s distinctive visual style has also generated high expectations among fans.

A great future for the franchise

While the “Ghost of Tsushima” franchise continues to expand into new formats, there is also news within the world of video games. This year the release of its sequel, “Ghost of Yōtei”, is expected to be released, set more than 300 years after the original game, in 1603 in the Hokkaido region.
