The long-awaited reunion of K-pop girl group GFriend has been confirmed, four years after their disbandment in 2021. The group’s former management agency, Source Musicannounced this week that the six members of the group will reunite to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut.
This news has deeply moved the group’s fans, known as “Buddy,” who have patiently waited for the chance to see these artists together again, who left a mark on the K-pop industry.
According to the agency’s statement, GFriend will be making a comeback in January next year as part of a special commemorative project. The goal of this project is to honor the 10th anniversary of the band’s debut, which took place in 2015, and to offer their fans a unique keepsake.
The former GFriend members expressed that this project is being carried out largely due to their desire to give their fans a precious and memorable moment. In this way, the girls will be celebrating their legacy as one of the most influential K-pop groups in the last decade.
GFriend debuted on January 15, 2015 with the mini-album Season of Glass. Since their first steps in the industry, they captured the attention of both the public and critics for their melodic musical style and impeccable choreography.
Unlike other girl groups who sought to differentiate themselves with bolder or more extravagant concepts, GFriend opted for a more traditional and youthful concept. This approach allowed them to connect in a special way with an audience that valued these characteristics in their music and performances.
One of the highlights of the group’s career was their performance of “Me Gustas Tu” in 2015. This performance went viral on social media because, despite heavy rain and a slippery stage, the members continued their performance with professionalism. After this event, people began to draw attention to the girls’ dedication and resilience, which significantly increased their popularity and helped to significantly consolidate their reputation in the K-pop scene.
Throughout their career, GFriend released numerous hits that became iconic K-pop songs. One of their biggest achievements came with the song “Rough” in 2016, which became a monumental hit and allowed them to win multiple awards on South Korean music shows. This triumph was closely followed by “Navillera,” another song that helped solidify their popularity and prove that the group was capable of maintaining their place among the most influential female groups in the industry despite the passage of time.
In 2017, with the release of “Fingertip,” GFriend began to show a shift towards a more mature concept, moving away from their youthful image to explore more complex themes and styles. This shift manifested itself in both the group’s aesthetic and musical style. The members began to experiment with new sounds and incorporate deeper themes into their songs.
Following this stylistic transformation, in 2018, their single “Time for the Moon Night” received numerous praises from the K-pop industry. This allowed them to see their artistic evolution, which reflected their growth as artists. GFriend had reached a level of musical maturity that allowed them to stand out in a highly competitive industry. Their penultimate hit before their disbandment was “Apple” (2020), a song that showed their most experimental and elegant side.

In May 2021, it was announced that the members of GFriend would not be renewing their contracts with Source Music, leading to the group’s official disbandment. The news shocked their fans and surprised the industry at large. However, the members assured that they would remain active in the entertainment field.
In fact, three of its members (Eunha, Umji and SinB) re-debuted as part of the group VIVIZ, while the other members have also followed different paths in music and acting.
Despite their disbandment, GFriend left behind an important legacy that lives on today. Their hits continue to be remembered as some of the best in recent K-pop history, and their influence has left a deep mark on the genre.
According to the girls, the promise of their temporary comeback is not only intended to commemorate the 10th anniversary of their debut, but is also intended as a tribute to the fans who have supported them from the beginning.
