As a rule, When there is a numbering change in the HDMI format, a new cable is needed. If you only change the letter, for example HDMI 2.1a, it is an update to the format that does not usually require a new cable. Although sometimes yes.

What’s new in HDMI 2.2

HDMI 2.1, in its latest revisions, accepts resolutions up to 10,240 x 4,320 pixels (10K) at 120 Hz, with a bandwidth of 48 Gbps. No television, monitor, or content reaches these values, but apparently they are not enough.

HDMI 2.2 will likely increase resolution to 12Kas well as the bitrate at lower resolutions, to 144Hz.

One of its innovations could be to achieve these values ​​without Display Stream Compression, that is, without compressing the image. For that to be possible, more bandwidth and, therefore, a new HDMI cable would be needed.

The logical thing is that HDMI 2.2 maintains the same port and is compatible with current cables, offering the most that these cables support. But to take advantage of its new features, you will need a new one.
