The National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD for its acronym in German), of neo-Nazi ideology, has changed its name to Die Heimat, which in Spanish translates as La Patria.
The decision was made at a conference in the city of Riesa, Saxony, in which 77 percent of the votes were in favor of the change, as reported by the German magazine ‘Der Spiegel’.
The name refers to a concept of “homeland” that “excludes non-ethnic Germans and immigrants or foreigners living in Germany.” As explained by the party itself, its objective is to interconnect “the resistance” against the politics of the “established”.
With some 3,150 members, Die Heimat is the strongest far-right party in Germany in number, but “with a clear downward trend”, according to figures from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in 2021.
