BRUSSELS Nov. 19 () –
The German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, pointed out this Tuesday that the cutting of the fiber optic cable that links Germany to Finland under the Baltic Sea is due to sabotage.
“We don’t know exactly and we don’t have any proof, but it seems like it,” said the German Defense Minister when asked about the hypothesis of intentional sabotage against this infrastructure. However, upon entering the meeting with his European counterparts in Brussels, he avoided delving into the case.
For his part, the Finnish Defense Minister, Anti Hakkanen, has indicated that an investigation is underway and the authorities involved must be given time to clarify the episode.
“It is clear that we have to have more protection for critical infrastructure, only after the investigation will we draw conclusions,” said the Finnish minister.
Germany and Finland denounced the cut of service and the opening of an investigation amid the escalation of tension with Russia. Both Berlin and Helsinki expressed their “deep concern” in a joint statement. “The fact that this incident immediately provokes suspicions of intention speaks for itself about the volatility of the present era,” they noted.
