September 13 () –
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser signed a migration agreement with Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi on Friday to promote the recruitment of qualified labour from the African country and facilitate the repatriation of irregular migrants.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stressed that the agreement, signed as part of Kenyan President William Ruto’s visit to Berlin, creates prospects for young Kenyans who will be able to complete their education in Germany, ARD reported.
“Our close cooperation with Kenya is growing steadily, making our countries attractive partners for companies, for example in future green hydrogen technology, climate protection and efforts to recruit skilled workers,” Scholz said on social media X after meeting Ruto.
Faeser, for her part, said she was “very satisfied” with the migration agreement. “We want to systematically enforce the return of people without the right to remain (in Germany)” she stressed, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior.
According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, 818 Kenyans were expected to leave Germany by the end of July. In total, there are around 15,000 Kenyan citizens in Germany.
The German government has signed similar agreements with India, Georgia and Morocco, and has agreed to closer cooperation on migration management with Colombia. Another pact is expected to be signed with Uzbekistan on Sunday during Chancellor Scholz’s trip to Asia, DPA reports.
