MADRID 5 Nov. () –
Georgia’s opposition came out again this Tuesday to protest against the election results of October 26, just one day after hundreds of people gathered in front of the country’s Parliament to demand an international investigation into alleged electoral fraud.
This time, the demonstration will end in front of the Court of Appeals of Georgia, where judicial decisions adopted by lower courts will be reviewed in relation to lawsuits filed by several NGOs, which point to violations of electoral law during elections that have given rise to victory for the governmental Georgian Dream.
Initially, the opposition parties had summoned their followers around 2:00 p.m. (local time) at the Sports Palace, according to information from the news portal News Georgia.
Georgian courts are currently analyzing more than a thousand lawsuits filed by opposition parties and NGOs over alleged irregularities in the elections. Although complaints are usually unsuccessful, the Tetritskaro District Court has revoked the results obtained in around thirty polling stations.
However, the president of parliament, Shalva Pauashvili, of Georgian Dream, has assured that the disinformation about the alleged irregularities has no other objective than to “achieve a change of government by force” in Georgia.
“Part of the disinformation about the elections is part of methods typical of hybrid warfare, they constitute attacks against democracy and seek a change by force. We see that there are no facts or evidence behind this information,” said Papuashvili, who has accused to the opposition of “lacking intention to collaborate with the investigation.” “This is the same case as that of the president, Salomé Zurabishvili,” he lamented.
