The Georgian authorities approved this Friday a resolution that includes the introduction of prison sentences in cases of interruption or blocking of the activities of the country’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) in view of the elections scheduled for this Saturday in the country.
The decision has been made just two days before citizens go to the polls to renew the 150 seats that make up Parliament at a political moment of vital importance.
The Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Kobajidze, has signed the measure, which includes sentences of between two and four years in prison to face actions that seek to hinder the work of the commission and prevent its ordinary functioning.
In the event that these actions take place with a “terrorist nature”, these sentences will be between 10 and 15 years in prison, according to the country’s media.
However, the president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has indicated that this implies introducing the CEC in the list of “strategic objects” of the country and assures that it is an attempt by the Government to “create tension” ahead of the event. electoral.
“This shows that they are trying to put us in a certain, tense psychological situation. Nobody is going to carry out a coup d’état, the CEC building must be where it is, the CEC must publish the real results of the elections… And all the world will be satisfied,” he declared in statements from the Orbeliani Palace, where the residence of the head of state of Georgia is located.
