Geely Auto Group Geely Auto has launched its latest generation of self-developed short-blade lithium iron phosphate batteries, offering best-in-class battery life, charging speed and maximum safety. Geely Auto’s new short-blade battery technology will become the new benchmark for electric vehicle batteries with industry-leading safety, compact size, higher energy density, better volume utilization and greater flexibility to fit different pack designs.

New safety standards

The new short battery technology for electric vehicles uses a high-strength, high thermal stability and high heat resistance diaphragm, with a highly stable separator along with safe electrodes resulting in higher energy density and safety. In addition, Geely Auto has applied its self-developed self-fusion technology on the electrode surfaces to block short circuits in the event of an accident. If the battery cell is punctured during an extreme crash, a layer of aluminum foil will fuse onto the battery diaphragm to create an insulating layer, preventing short circuits and thermal runaway events.

To date, the standard automotive test for EV battery safety performance is the single-needle puncture test, however Geely Auto has been testing the New Short-Blade EV Battery Technology with eight simultaneous puncture needles, which significantly increases the amount of damage received in extreme crash situations.

During testing, it was simultaneously punctured by eight steel needles in unison, each with a diameter of 5 mm, and allowed to sit for 1 hour with no ill effects. Additionally, the New EV Battery Technology was subjected to a 5.8 mm (5.8×42 mm) infantry rifle bullet penetration test, with no thermal ignition events occurring.

Surpassing the industry benchmark, torture testing as standard

In addition to passing an 8-needle puncture test, Geely also subjected the new short-blade EV battery technology to the industry’s first “Six Extremes” serial test, including corrosive seawater immersion, extreme cold environment, high-frequency pack bottom scraping, 26-ton overweight rolling, single-pack side collision, and fire roasting. With the new short-blade EV battery technology’s patented grid frame design, energy-absorbing cavity, three-layer bottom protection plate, CTB integration, thermal runaway control system, and many other safety features, the battery successfully passed all six tests.

Geely tested the New EV Short Battery Technology under exponentially higher conditions than the industry standard. The results showed that the New EV Battery Technology did not experience thermal runaway, smoke, ignition or combustion in all cases. In addition, the insulation resistance values ​​of the battery electrodes and the sealing status of the cells remained normal. The results speak for themselves and prove that the new short battery for electric vehicles remains safe and reliable under the most extreme conditions.

1 million kilometers of safe driving

The use of multi-element doped electrode materials, combined with the smaller size and low internal resistance of the battery, has given the new short battery technology for electric vehicles a reduced internal chemical reaction rate that significantly extends battery life.

According to tests conducted by Geely, the service life of the new short-blade battery technology can reach 3,500 cycles, which is equivalent to charging and driving for 1 million kilometers with minimal impact on battery range. Based on an average family driving 20,000 kilometers per year, the new short-blade battery technology can be in service for up to 50 years, significantly extending battery life, improving the residual value of second-hand electric vehicles, and reducing carbon emissions by more than 80,000 tons per year.

Super fast charging and stable performance at low temperatures

The new short-sheet battery technology for EVs has effectively solved the problem of high internal resistance found in long-sheet batteries available on the market. Geely’s latest battery also uses long, thin carbon nanotubes to create a “highway” for ion transmission, as well as additives to improve the film’s permeability, making it easier for lithium ions to travel between the electrodes and greatly improving fast charging performance.

Geely Auto has applied its self-developed auto-fusion technology to the electrode surfaces to block short circuits in the event of an accident.

Test data shows that for the same capacity battery, the average charging time for 10-80% SOC of the long battery is 26 minutes, with an average charging rate of 1.61C, with the new short battery technology for EV, the average time was 17 minutes 4 seconds with an average charging rate of 2.45C.

In addition, in extreme cold environments, the new battery technology for electric vehicles has a high discharge capacity and a longer range than long-cell batteries.

At ambient temperatures of -30℃, the capacity retention rate of the long-blade battery dropped to 78.96% on average, while the New EV Short Battery Technology retained 90.54% of its capacity.
