The Russian gas company Gazprom has warned on Tuesday that the lawsuit filed by the Ukrainian company Naftogaz before the International Court of Arbitration, based in Switzerland, could lead to the prohibition of gas transactions to Ukraine by Russia.
“Gazprom categorically rejects all Naftogaz’s claims about the procedures initiated regarding the transit of Russian gas to Europe: services not provided by the Ukrainian side should not and will not be paid,” the Russian company said in a statement collected by the Gazprom. Interfax news agency.
“Naftogaz, without proper reasons, refused to fulfill its transit obligations through Sojranivka, and the Ukrainian company acknowledged the fact of non-provision of services. It is well aware that, under the agreement, non-compliance with these obligations implies that there is no payment, even if you claim a force majeure event on the territory of Ukraine,” Gazprom recalled.
In this sense, he has declared that thanks to the “large number” of sanctions imposed against Russia, Sweden and Switzerland are “hostile countries” for Moscow, for which he has questioned whether a “fair and impartial hearing” will be held. .
Naftogaz announced on September 9 that it was going to take legal action against Gazprom because the company had not paid for the services of “arranging the transportation of natural gas through the territory of Ukraine”, referring to payments not sent after the drastic reduction in gas supply since the start of the military offensive in February.
By filing the complaint, which falls to this arbitration court based in Zurich, Switzerland, the Ukrainian firm hopes to achieve the same result as in 2019, when a Swedish court awarded it more than 3,000 million euros after a fight with Gazprom.
Gazprom has reduced the amount it transfers to Ukraine in exchange for the gas passing through its territory, despite the fact that the contract that both parties signed in 2019 stipulates a minimum rate regardless of the volume of gas.
