Gas truck explosion kills more than 15 in Haiti, PM says

More than 15 people have died in western Haiti after a gas tanker exploded on Saturday, Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille said in a message on social media.

Another 40 people suffered serious burns in the incident near Miragoane in Nippes department, he added. He said the figures were still preliminary and the government was planning helicopter evacuations.

“The Government stands in solidarity with all the victims and their families,” said Conille.

A similar explosion of a fuel truck In 2021, in the city of Cap-Haïtien, it left at least 60 dead.

In recent months, violent gangs have taken over much of the capital and spread to nearby regions, fuelling a humanitarian crisis with mass displacement, sexual violence, child recruitment and widespread hunger.

Haiti earlier this month expanded its state of emergency to cover the entire country.
