The foreign ministers of the G7 group, which groups Canada, the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, have condemned this Thursday the executions of four activists by the military junta that has governed Burma since the coup. February 2021
“We strongly condemn the four executions carried out by the Burmese military junta. These executions, the first in the last 30 years, and the absence of fair trials show how the junta is moving towards the destruction of the democratic aspirations of the Burmese people”, have noted in a statement.
In it, the ministers have highlighted that those executed are influential members of the democratic opposition and have conveyed their condolences to the families and friends of the four victims, as well as those of “those who have been killed, tortured or arrested in Burma since that the Army came to power illegitimately”.
“We continue to condemn the military coup in Burma and express our grave concern about the economic, political, social, humanitarian and human rights situation in the country,” they stressed.
Likewise, he has emphasized the importance of the “military regime putting an immediate end to the use of violence and stopping arbitrary executions.” In addition, the G7 ministers have called for the release of “arbitrarily detained political prisoners” and have reaffirmed their support for the measures put in place by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “This includes an inclusive dialogue process that also includes the opposition,” they have insisted.
