Funeral begins in West Bank for US activist shot by Israeli forces

Türkiye is working to achieve the repatriation of the remains of the aid worker, of Turkish descent

September 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The funeral of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi began Monday in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, near the spot where she died after being shot in the head by Israeli security forces during a protest against settlement expansion in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Thousands of people gathered in the area to say goodbye to the activist, who was 26 years old and had dual nationality, in a ceremony that began at around 2:00 p.m. (local time) after her body was transferred from Rafidia hospital.

On Monday, Turkish authorities announced that they had taken steps to repatriate the remains directly after Israeli authorities “closed the land crossings between Palestine and Jordan,” according to Oncu Keçeli, spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Minister.

“At the request of his family, we are working on the possibility of bringing the body directly by plane to avoid further delays,” Keçeli said in a message posted on his account on the social network X.

The Turkish Consulate in Jerusalem is in contact with local authorities to complete the process as soon as possible, he said, while the Turkish Consulate in the US city of Los Angeles has already taken the necessary steps to coordinate the transfer of their relatives from Turkey.

Ankara has strongly condemned the incident and has expressed outrage since the death of the activist, who was working with the Fazaa campaign, which aims to support and protect Palestinian farmers from violations committed by Israeli settlers and soldiers, came to light.

She also worked with the International Solidarity Movement, the same organisation as activist Rachel Corrie, who was also killed by Israeli forces while trying to prevent the demolition of a house in Gaza in 2003.
