From dream to reality: the setbacks of African nurses hired in Quebec

Integration difficulties, stress and anxiety, failures and sometimes even racist abuse. Almost two years after the arrival of the first nurses, many of them hired in Africa, a Quebec international recruitment program is suffering setbacks. According to witnesses, promises of leveling and homologation of their nursing diplomas sometimes fail on the first attempt. They are then offered a job as an assistant in a nursing home or expelled when their student visa expires. This program to alleviate the shortage of health personnel is “far from fulfilling all its promises,” say community representatives. A report by François Rihouay and Joanne Profeta.
