Friends of Colombian doctor Edwin Arrieta said they felt “relief” after meeting him the sentence to life imprisonment of Spanish chef Daniel Sancho for the murder of the surgeon on the Thai island of Koh Pha Ngan.
The Voice of America He spoke to them in Santa Cruz de Lorica, a small Colombian town in the Caribbean department of Córdoba, where the surgeon was from.
“We received the news with great satisfaction. Justice was done for Edwin, that was what we were hoping for, but we are left with a bitter taste because this will not bring our friend back to us,” he told the newspaper. VOA Ella Ballesteros, a school friend of the Colombian surgeon.
On the street where Arrieta grew up, Osmany Martínez, another of the neighbors who grew up with him, recalled that he always liked having lots of friends and “would ride his bike from the Moroles family’s house and then to the Jattins’ every day. He was always a very good friend, that’s why Lorica had been waiting for the sentence since the night before, hoping that justice would be done.”
Martinez says to the VOA “The people of Lorica spent entire nights without sleep when the news of his death became known. It was a terrible and painful event for his family, whom we saw suffer greatly, so the sentence was what we expected.”
The Thai courts sentenced Daniel Sancho to life imprisonment, considering that the Spanish chef acted premeditatedly in taking the life of the Colombian doctor and dismembering his body.
José Domingo Pardo, another of Arrieta’s friends, says he feels “satisfied” with the sentence because “justice has been done,” although the court ruling “will not bring life or happiness back to his family.”
“The last time I saw him was one day when he arrived from Montería (capital of Córdoba) and we met at the Jattin family home. He said to me: ‘José, how are you? How have you been? I’m glad to see you, it’s been so long since I saw you,’ and we hugged each other,” Pardo told the newspaper. VOA.
The lawyer for the Arrieta family, Juan Gonzalo Ospina, said they “feel satisfied” with the decision of the Koh Samui court to sentence Daniel Sancho to life imprisonment.
“The loss of Edwin has brought much suffering to a family that was unable to say goodbye to their loved one. Therefore, the court decision has a great emotional impact on our family unit, which forces us to take a reasonable amount of time to make a statement on the content of the decision, leaving the statements in the hands of our legal representatives,” Arrieta’s family stated in a statement.
