He began his political career in the conservative group The Republicans (LR) and is currently one of the main leaders on Macron’s right-wing side.
A technocrat in the shadows

Macron will do everything possible to keep his political force at the helm of France, but he knows that there are many complications in forming a majority government.
Faced with uncertainty, both he and his coalition are looking for a way out, and someone with a more technical profile, less political, little known and with limited experience and under supervision, could be the right person to face the challenge. Who he is or who is being considered is still unknown.
A green opposition
Socialism represented by Faure and Macron’s centrism are not running alone on the track. Marine Tondelierof the Greenis recognized by everyone for dressing in a way that is associated with her ideas. Young, only 37 years old, she is seen as a leader with potential and someone to trust in going forward. With good rhetoric, she stands out for her heated speeches against the extreme right and those close to her. Despite this, she is widely criticized for her lack of experience in national government and is not considered a candidate with the necessary skills to reach the position.
Also from the opposition wing, there is Xavier Bertrand59 years old. He was Minister of Health and Labour under Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy, which makes him a man who knows how things work from the inside. His hallmark: making more and better services available to the working class and investing social spending in those who need it most. He has been a strong opponent of the current president in his proposal to raise the retirement age, harshly criticising him on repeated occasions.
More support for the president
Macron is not alone and his desire to maintain governance is high. His great ally is François Bayrou73 years old and mayor of his home region, Pauin the southwest of the country. His party is Modem, which he leads and belongs to the Ensemble alliance, the same as the president. Recognized by his peers as a classic social democrat and with policies rather skewed towards the left wing within the ruling sector.
His style is somewhat confrontational and he has recently decided to confront the best-positioned figures to the right of Macron. One example is Darmanin himself, who advocates turning to LR to find enough allies to maintain power. In Bayrou’s words, not everything serves these purposes and one should not, under any circumstances, abandon a significant part of the electorate just to continue governing.
