The first consequences of the political earthquake which took place this Sunday in France. The current Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, He announced his resignation shortly after the results of the second round of the legislative elections were announced, which gave victory to the leftist coalition of the New Popular Front.
“I will offer my resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday morning“. With these words, Attal, who became the youngest head of government in history at the beginning of the year, announced his departure from the Executive in a brief appearance. However, he has shown himself willing to carry out his duties for as long as necessary.
Attal began his speech by praising the strategy of the Macronist bloc. “Tonight no absolute majority can be led by the extremes, thanks to our determination and the strength of our valueswe are standing,” he said. The still prime minister also emphasized that the Centrism “is alive and kicking” thanks to the “determination” of its representatives. “We have held on and we have three times as many deputies as the estimates suggested at the beginning of this campaign,” he stressed.
Attal later explained the reasons for his decision. Broadly speaking, it is because the Macronist party, despite not having come third (as happened in the first round of elections), has not been able to overcome the coalition led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has already demanded to govern. Macron’s party has obtained 168 seats in the Assembly, compared to the 244 they had.
“I would like to congratulate the 577 elected deputies“I did not choose this dissolution, but I refused to submit. We decided to fight. I warned of the risk of an absolute majority for La France Insoumise or the National Rally and of the risk of our movement disappearing. These three risks were dismissed by the French. We owe it to this French spirit attached to its values,” argued Attal.
Election results
The left coalition New Popular Front has achieved 182 seats in the National Assembly after the second round of elections, thus avoiding a majority for the far-right party National Grouping, that achieves 143 seats and thus remains in third position, although none of the parties achieved an absolute majority of 289 deputies.
The second group is for Together for the Republicthe parties related to the current president of France, Emmanuel Macron, who have managed to 168 seats in an election marked by a historic turnout that reached over 65%, an unprecedented figure since 1997.
These results represent a reversal from the first round, in which the National Rally was the most voted party with more than 33% support. Following the results of June 30, the left and centre parties set up a cordon sanitaire to try to prevent a far-right government that has borne fruit.
