French coastguard rescues 223 migrants in the English Channel

Aug. 31 () –

The French Coast Guard has reported that it has rescued 223 migrants in the waters of the English Channel in the last 48 hours as they tried to reach Great Britain.

The migrants were travelling in several small boats, most of which were overloaded and had technical problems, according to the French maritime prefecture.

The rescued have been taken to Boulogne and Dunkirk. Some of them were rescued when they were already in the water or on sandbanks after their boats sank. Others refused help in order to reach the British coast.

The United Kingdom has tried to stop the arrival of migrants from France, on an extremely dangerous route due to strong currents and the traffic of large ships.
